Shrimp in the Freshwater Aquarium

Over the years I have kept several types of freshwater shrimp. Some have been challenging while others have been a piece of cake. My advice, is to start off with the easy shrimp and work your way up.

If your keeping large fish add any shrimp with caution as the shrimp will most likely become food for large fish. Shrimps need good water quality and do suprisingly well when kept in higher numbers. Keep your shrimp tank's water parameters solid. Using a larger tank helps prevent rapid changes.

Amano shrimp are by far the most effective cleaners I have kept. Unfortunately they do not breed in freshwater. Mine have lived over a year and are great addition to my freshwater planted tank. Amano shrimp are combative. They hold their own against most dwarf cichlids and other small fish.

CRS - Crystal Red Shrimp are fantastic. Keep these beauties in a shrimp only tank. At current prices you can not afford to lose them to hungry fish. A small colony of high grade shrimp will set you back a few buck$. Purchase the highest grade you can afford and keep them alone in a pristine planted tank.

RCS - Red Cherry Shrimp are very prolific. In a healthy planted aquarium they will multiply quickly. There are only few fish that can not fit these shrimp in their mouths so add them to a fish tank with caution.

If you are serious about breeding any shrimp then you will keep them in shrimp only tank.
